The table illustrates the proportion of housholds that relied on five renewable energy sources across four nations in 2020.
Overall, solar and wind energy were the most popular sources in most countries, particularly in Germany and Brazil while the reverse was true for geothermal energy in all four nations.
In Germany, solar energy was the most widely used source, at 40%, followed by wind power at 35%. In contrast hydro and biomass were far less common, at 10% each, while geothermal accounted for only 5%.A similar pattern can be seen in Brazil where solar (35%) and wind (30%) dominated. However, hydro energy was also relatively significant in Brazil, making up 25% of household usage.
In China, solar energy was again the leading source at 30%, with wind and hydro representing 25% and 20% respectively. Biomass usage stood at 20% whereas geotheremal was the least popular at just 5%. By comparison, in the USA biomass was the most common renewable source (30%), slightly higher than solar at 25%. Wind and hydro accounted for 20% and 15% respectively, while geothermal made up only 10%.
