Overall, the percentages of population living in urban areas increased consistently throughout the period, except for Oceania. North America accounted for the largest share, whereas Africa recorded the smallest proportion.

Globally, the proportion of population in urban areas increased significantly from around 38% in 1975 and peaked at just below 70% in 2050. A similar pattern occurred in all given regions, except for Oceania which experienced minor fluctuation from 70% in 1975, fell slightly to just below 70%, before rising again to just above 70% in 2050.

Across all regions, North America recorded the highest share in every period, rising from around 75% in 1975 to just below 90% in 2050.
