There is a view that staying overseas is the best way to acquire a new language. While this trend seems sensible in some ways, I would disagree with this opinion due to some reasons: availability of advanced online learning resources and high financial cost of living abroad.
One reason why some people might agree with this opinion is that fully language immersion environment. This is because, when individuals live in foreign countries, they are required to interact with their citizens for daily needs by using these countries’ languages. For instance, if people want to purchase daily necessities, they will face these kinds of situations every day. After utilizing these languages for communication again and again, they might be adapted easily thus learning faster and improving their fluency instead of attending various types of language courses. Another obvious reason can be exposure to authentic language usage. Living abroad allows learners to hear real-life conversations, such as slang and informal expressions. This can lead to developing a better understanding of how the language is used in everyday contexts, which is often challenged to achieve through textbooks alone. Thus, it is understandable why some individuals may support the idea of moving abroad for a new language.
In my opinion, however, this statement sounds inappropriate, which means people may learn foreign languages without staying in other countries. First, in today’s fast-paced world every opportunity is available. This is because learners can learn new languages using different kinds of apps even staying at home. For example, they just download suitable platforms from the internet and start learning this step by step without allocating huge amounts of money to attending courses. Take Duolingo as an example, it is user-friendly and suitable for all ages. Another feasible factor can be high financial cost of living overseas. In other words, moving abroad requires hefty sums for accommodation, food and transportation which many people cannot afford. Therefore, it may not be a practical option for everyone.
In conclusion, although learning foreign languages by living abroad can be accepted due to some reasons, I disagree with this opinion as certain factors: availability of advanced online learning resources and high financial cost of living abroad seem even greater.
