In this day and age, there is an ongoing debate as to whether government funding for universities should only be allocated to top students, while other students have to rely on tuition fees and private sponsorship. From my perspective, I partly agree with this statement because of some reasons that are explained in this essay.
On the one hand, Allocating authority funding for top student can encourage academic excellence. Schocholarships based on performance can cultivate student’s motivation to work harder, knowing their knodge knowledge may be rewarded. Investing money for top students also lead to higher innovation and productivity in the long-term as these students are more likely to succeed and contribute to society. Moreover, this investment also make top gifted students stays because of exchange development, some students will work in foreign country. Therefore, there are many reason that government money is used efficiently and with measurable outcomes.
On the other hand, this view can cause inequality in this society especially on university environment. Students with talented can have a lot of opportunities. However, average students or student from disadvantaged background may not perform well initially due to a lack of resource and support. Additionally, relying private sponsors may influence the academic programme to suit the interestes and higher tuition fees can make university education unaffordable for low-income families. As a result, reducing the overall education level of the country.
In conclusion, while rewarding the best students with scholarship is the best way to promote their academic excellence, I partly agree with the idea of removing all other government funding from university. This investment should be balanced between top students and average student for building a fair and effective higher education system.
