Many large cities around the world have commercial zoos in order to save the animals from extinction. A portion of individuals claim that relocating animals to the zoos from their natural environment can give a negative impact. However, in my view, there are two-sided possible considerations in relocating the animals to the zoos, for the following reasons.
First of all, animals need to adapt to a new ‘artificial’ environment from their natural habitat. Animals in forest are already bonded to every part of their ecosystem. Although the authorities have a good quality of zoos’ facilities, in my opinion, the animals sometimes can not survive from surpassing the tendency of habitat’s transition that lead to experiencing stress and hunger. In fact, many endangered species of animals died in their first-year in Taman Safari Bogor in 2021 due to weightloss and experiencing stress.
Secondly, another consideration for the authorities to reallocated the animals to the zoos is protection. Many of endangered animals in Indonesia were haunted by some crazy individuals. Even though the authorities has published some regulation to punish heavily the haunters, but this punishment is not effective. For example, the Sumatran Tigers were haunted for their skin tagged in a marketplace with high price as a fashion material. Hence, this animals captured by the authorities and placed in the conservation area. They are underprotection in the zoos to ensure their existence.
In conclusion, the decision of authorities to allocate the animals from their natural environment is a double-edged decision, which in one side it should be done for animals’ protection, but in another side the animals should adapt and survive from their new environment. Hence, the authorities should overlook on this decision and find other alternative methods in the way to prolong their existence.
