Band 7+: Some people get into debt by buying things they don't need and can't afford. What are the reasons for this behaviour? What action can be taken to prevent people from having this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is widely believed that the majority of people tend toward consumerism nowadays. Shopping has become an essential part of life. For some people, it is even part of their daily routine. Everyone has their own reasons for this behavior, but the most common are trying to pass the time and trying to heal from soul-crushing emotions.

Definitely, shopping attracts people who want to waste time, and it is difficult to leave a shopping center or a website without making purchases. So, customers spend tons of money there, usually on things they do not really need. Moreover, installment payments have become popular recently. They give people an opportunity to buy even if they cannot afford it now. Other people find shopping to be an option to deal with a bad mood or even grief. The process helps to distract oneself. It really works for some individuals but harms others through addiction to buying.

Despite some positive results, it must not be overlooked that consumerism leads to debt and addiction. Thus, people should prevent these consequences. One of the solutions is making it a goal to buy something that you really need. Moreover, it will be better to keep money aside for an expensive purchase because you will need more time to collect the full cost. So, if money has a purpose, a person will not want to spend it on something useless.

To summarize, shopping plays the role of a time-consuming hobby and a treatment for a bad mood or grief. Nevertheless, the process can have detrimental results. So, people should try not to become addicted and should deal with it by setting a goal that requires money.
