In today’s world, online advertisement is being promoted largely to persuade people into purchasing things that are unnecessary. I believe that this trend has negative and positive impacts on both society and individuals.
Consumerism has some significant advantages. Firstly, it can contribute to economic growth. This is because when people spend more on goods and services, businesses can earn more salaries and profits. For example, a large consumption market for goods such as phones or cars can promote many companies to expand their products and contribute to national economy. Secondly, it can also improve people’s quality of life. In other words, the wider range of products and services facilitate people’s access to more advanced technologies, which make their daily life more convenient and comfortable.
However, consumerism also leads to several adverse effects. Firstly, it causes environmental degradation. Indeed, the constant replacement of products not only increases the number of wastes but also requires more natural resources for production. For example, a number of children’s toys thrown away each year contributes to the number of plastic wastes, which leads to serious pollution. Secondly, it also creates many financial difficulties. Particularly, constantly exposed to advertisements, people tend to spend money on products that they do not actually need instead of saving their money for healthcare and other important matters. As a result, it may eventually lead to financial burden such as falling into debt.
In conclusion, while advertising plays a particular role in a nation’s economy, it also brings back several advantages.
