Band 4+: Some people believe that the widespread use of technology, such as smartphones and social media, has caused more harm than good to society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people say that the growing use of devices such as social media and gadgets has negative consequenses for teenagers’ mental and social development. I totally agree with this statement, and will explain in this essay.

On the one hand, teenagers who spend much time on screen are at risk of mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Therefore, the impact of these gadgets could affect their performence in the long-term. For instance, the majorty of students have difficulty with critical thinking becuse of spending too much on infinite scrolling at night that leads to poor sleep quality and reduces concentration. As a result, this affects their educational performance, which they cannot paritcipate in the classroom, and find it hard to get high grades in school.

On the other hand, many older teenagers suffer from feeling of isloation cause by social media interaction. They depend heavliy on their gadgets to communicate with their peers. For this reason, they spend less time interacting face-to-face. To clarify that, the Australian govrenment has restricted social media platforms from children under 16 years old, hence; this decision may encourage teenagers to spend more time communicating in person.

In conclusion, I frimly believe that the increasing number of gadgets use has several negative impacts on teenagers’ mental health issues and social skills.
