Before the eruption, the volcano was located in the western part of the island and was surrounded by many trees while the village was located to the eastern part of the volcano, consisting of numerous houses surrounded by palm trees. Houses were arranged around small lakes. Palm trees were scattered throughout the village.
After the eruption, the eruption dramatically changed the landscape. Massive lava flowed down to the village and destroyed the houses and trees directly in its path. There were only a handful of houses remaining. These surviving homes were scattered across the eastern part of the village instead of being concentrated around a central open area. The central pond remained, with only two palm trees nearby.
