Overall, employment rate in retail and healthcare experienced an overall increase. In contrast, jobs in manufacturing and agriculture declined throughout the period.
In 1960, healthcare had the lowest number of jobs available, just below 2.5 million. However, it dramatically increased, and this sector had more than 15 million of jobs in 2020. Similar pattern could be observed on retail category, which started at around 6 millions of jobs in 1960, and reached a peak of 15 million in 2000. At the end of the period, it had a figure of around 16 millions.
Manufacturing was initially the sector with the largest number of jobs at 15 million, and it drastically increased to 20 million in 1980. Nevertheless, the figure had a steep decline to around 14 million in 2020. Similarly, agriculture sector began with the same figure as retail at around 6 million in 1960. However, this area of economic sector dropped to just around 2.5 million in 1980. At the end of the period, it had the lowest recorded number at around 2 million.
