Nowadays in schools and universities girls usually choose arts subjects such as languages, while boys prefer science subjects like physics. I think this happens because of influences and personal interests. I believe students should be encouraged to choose subjects based on their abilities than their gender.
One reason for this difference is the way children are raised. From an age boys are often encouraged to play with toys related to science and technology while girls are more likely to be interested in reading, drawing or languages. As a result they develop interests before they reach university. Another reason is that some careers are traditionally connected with a gender. For example engineering is often seen as a job for men whereas teaching languages is considered suitable for women.
However I do not think this tendency should continue. Every student should have the opportunity to study any subject they like. If girls are interested in physics or boys enjoy learning languages they should not feel afraid of being judged by others. Schools should also introduce students to male and female role models in different fields so they can make decisions with more confidence.
In conclusion the difference in choice is mainly caused by social expectations and personal interests. In my opinion schools should reduce gender stereotypes. Encourage students to choose subjects according to their talents and goals not because of traditional ideas, about gender.
