Band 9: Some of the methods used in advertising are unethical and unacceptable in today's society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, advertising has become an integral part of daily life, appearing on television, the internet, billboards, and even mobile devices. However, many advertisements employ strategies that are widely regarded as unethical and unacceptable. This essay will argue that such practices are indeed problematic, as they manipulate consumers and promote harmful behaviors.

Firstly, the intrusive nature of modern advertising raises ethical concerns. With advances in mobile technology, companies can now send promotional messages even when users are offline, such as through text messages. This constant bombardment leaves individuals with limited opportunities to avoid advertisements, infringing on their privacy and personal space. For instance, it is increasingly common to receive unsolicited ads during work or leisure hours, which can lead to frustration and a sense of exploitation.

Additionally, advertising often encourages consumers to purchase items they neither need nor can afford, particularly targeting vulnerable groups like children and young people. These advertisements showcase the latest toys, music, and fashion trends, creating immense pressure on parents to comply. A telling example is the recent craze for Labubu dolls, which sold out instantly after being endorsed by K-pop artists in misleading psychological ads. Many buyers later realized the product did not offer the functionality depicted, highlighting how such tactics exploit impulsive desires.

Furthermore, the promotion of tobacco and alcohol products remains a controversial area of advertising. Although numerous countries have banned direct commercials for these items, companies have devised alternative marketing strategies. Alcohol advertisements, for instance, can inadvertently encourage excessive consumption and underage drinking. Similarly, tobacco ads often associate smoking with power and success, enticing young individuals to adopt harmful habits. These methods prioritize profit over public health, making them morally indefensible.

It is widely acknowledged that advertisements are inescapable in modern life, constantly urging people to buy goods that may be overpriced, unnecessary, or unhealthy. In conclusion, I strongly agree that many advertising techniques are ethically questionable and do not align with the values of today’s society, necessitating stricter regulations to protect consumers.
