Band 9: Some people think that government should subsidize fruits and vegetables to make healthy food more affordable. Others argue that government should tax unhealthy food instead. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Governments worldwide are increasingly forced to intervene in public health due to the alarming rise in lifestyle-related diseases. To combat this, some experts advocate for subsidizing fresh produce, while others believe that levying taxes on junk food is a more viable solution. This essay will discuss both perspectives and argue that a combined approach is the most effective strategy. On the one hand, lowering the cost of fruits and vegetables through government subsidies is a highly positive intervention. In many parts of the world, nutritious food is treated as a premium commodity, forcing low-income families to rely on cheap, calorie-dense processed meals. By artificially reducing the retail price of fresh produce, governments can make balanced nutrition financially accessible to all socioeconomic classes. Furthermore, this approach incentivizes agricultural sectors to grow healthier crops and fosters long-term dietary habits without penalizing vulnerable populations.

On the other hand, implementing taxes on unhealthy items, often referred to as “sin taxes,” serves as a powerful economic deterrent. High taxes on sugary beverages and fast food directly discourage consumers from purchasing them. A clear example of this is the sugar tax introduced in the UK, which forced many beverage manufacturers to drastically reduce sugar content to avoid higher prices. Additionally, the revenue generated from these penalties provides governments with substantial funds that can be reinvested into public healthcare systems and national nutritional awareness campaigns. In my opinion, neither strategy should be used in isolation. Relying solely on taxation can unfairly penalize poor families who live in “food deserts” where healthy alternatives are unavailable. Conversely, subsidies alone may not be strong enough to counteract the addictive nature of heavily marketed processed foods. Therefore, the ideal solution is a self-sustaining fiscal model: governments should use the tax revenue collected from junk food manufacturers to directly fund the subsidies for fresh fruits and vegetables.

n conclusion, while subsidies proactively encourage healthy eating, taxes aggressively penalize poor dietary choices. A balanced and synchronized application of both methods represents the most sustainable framework for improving public health.
