The diversity of flora and fauna is decreasing across the globe. This issue is mainly driven by illegal poaching and significant environmental changes, including global warming, deforestation, and pollution. It also poses a serious threat because it may lead to detrimental consequences such as extinction of species and as a result ecological disbalance.
The primary reason for the decline in biodiversity is human activities such as illegal poaching and deforestation. As woods are cut down for both urban and agricultural needs, countless plants and animals lose their natural habitat and as a result become extinct due to inappropriate conditions of living and reproducing. Moreover, poachers often worsen this issue while killing rare animal species and collecting endangered plants in order to make money effortlessly. In addition, air, soil, and water pollution negatively affect ecosystems by destroying proper conditions, while global warming changes the climate faster than flora and fauna can adapt. For instance, many forests in the Carpathian mountains are experiencing major deforestation nowadays, which has already significantly affected its ecosystem, pushing many species towards extinction.
Loss of biodiversity is the major concern because it threatens both ecological and human well-being. In terms of ecology, it leads to loss of balance and ecosystem collapse while in terms of human well-being, it causes a deficit of reliable food and medicines that are often made from plants. For example, if a vital medicine consists of healing herbs, there might be a serious deficit due to extinction of these herbs. Therefore, the diversity of animals and plants appears as a crucial aspect of both ecosystem and human well-being.
In conclusion, the global decline in flora and fauna diversity is mainly caused by human activities such as poaching, habitat destruction, and climate change. This issue might have inevitable consequences for humanity because it disrupts ecosystems and threatens the natural resources that human societies depend on. Thus, maintaining biodiversity should be a priority for our civilization and must not be ignored by society.
