Certain people believe that science should be made a compulsory core subject in the school curriculum, whereas others argue that it should be offered as an elective. This essay will discuss both views beforepresenting my opinion.
On the one hand, opponents argue that science should be offered as an elective subject based on students’ interests and preferences. Some students perceive science as a challenging subject and have little interest in studying it. Therefore, those with different aptitudes should not be compelled to study science, as the pressure to perform well may cause significant stress and adversely affect their overall well-being. Furthermore, students should choose science only if it aligns with their higher education plans and career aspirations. Individuals who intend to become lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs, or professional athletes may find science irrelevant to their chosen professions. For instance, it has often been observed that students who are forced to study a subject against their will either achieve poor academic results or eventually drop out.
On the other hand, proponents argue that science should be a compulsory core subject because it provides a strong foundation for essential life skills. Studying science helps students develop logical reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, while also preparing them for a technology-driven world. In addition, students aspiring to become scientists, engineers, doctors, or other professionals in STEM-related fields require a solid understanding of scientific principles. Moreover, in today’s digital era, scientific knowledge has become increasingly important, as many students pursue STEM courses that enhance their employability and enable them to secure well-paid jobs. For instance, advanced education and specialisation in science often lead to rewarding long-term career opportunities.
In conclusion, I believe that science should remain a compulsory subject until the end of secondary education, as it develops essential life skills and prepares students for future career opportunities.
