Overall, it can be seen that over the period, the number of annual openings declined overall, and the number of closures fluctuated. In most years, the number of closures was higher than the number of openings.
In 2011, 8500 shops were opened, but the figure dropped significantly to less than 4,000 openings. For the next two years the number of annual openings rose gradually, and in 2013 and 2014 around 5,000 and 6,000 shops were opened respectively. After that, the figure dropped back to nearly 4,000 shops and remained stable for the next two years. In 2018, it decreased again and reached 3,000 shops.
A different pattern can be seen in the number of closures. Starting at around 6,500 closures in 2011, the figure reached its peak of approximately 7,200 closures by 2013. However, in 2015 the number plummeted and reached a lowest point of about 600 closed shops. Subsequently, the figure quickly recovered and the number rose to about 5,200 shops in 2016 and remained relatively stable until 2018.
