The chart gives data about global immigration in Canada, emigration and net migration between 2005 and 2015 over the ten year period.
Both immigration and emigration rates rose over the period shown, but the figures for immigration were significantly higher. Net migration peaked in 2011 and 2014.
In 2005, 450,000 people came to live in Canada , while the number of people who emigrated stood at just under 300,000. The figure for net migrations was over 150,000, and it remained at similar level until 2010. From 2005 to 2009, the immigration rate rose nearly by 140,000 individuals, but there was a much smaller rise in emigration. Net migration peaked at 200,000 people in 2011.
After 2009, the rate of immigration remained high , but the total figures fluctuated slightly. Immigration fell briefly in 2010, before stabilizing at around 550,000 people. As a result , the net migration figure fell back to around 180,000 in 2012 and remained at a similar level until the end of the period.
