Nowadays, conducting test and exam is a key feature of school systems in most countries. I believe there are significant benefits of education with only a few minor drawbacks.
Test and examinations provide numerous advantages, particularly because they help students evaluate their academic progress and prepare for their future. Through examinations, children can identify their strengths and weaknesses, which allows them to learn from their mistakes and seek guidance from teachers to improve. Consequently, students become more aware of their learning gaps and can develop strategies to overcome them. Furthermore, solving challenging questions during exams can enhance students’ critical abilities and strengthen their understanding of academic concepts. For example, students in China frequently participate in competitive examinations, which encourages them to develop discipline, improve their study habits, and enhance their problem-solving skills.
However, there are also some disadvantages to conducting frequent tests and examinations in schools. The main concern is that excessive academic pressure can negatively affect students’ mental well being. Continuous preparation for exams and comparison with classmates may cause anxiety and stress, especially among students who fear achieving lower marks than their peers. As a result, some learners may develop a negative attitude towards examinations and lose confidence in their abilities. For example, Finland’s education system, which places less emphasis on traditional examinations and focuses more on continuous learning, has received positive feedback from many students.
In conclusion, although examinations can create pressure and anxiety among students, I believe their advantages are greater because they help learners assess their progress, develop important skills, and prepare for future challenges. Therefore, a balanced examination system can play an essential role in improving students’ academic and personal development.
