Band 7+: Some people believe that universities should only accept students with high marks. Others think that students of all ages and abilities levels should be able to attend universities. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There is a growing consensus among individuals regarding the criterias for people who pursue studies at universities. While some people argue that excellent academic performance plays a primary role, I respectfully disagree with this viewpoint and contend that all people should get the chance to attend universities within their age group or poor exam results.

First and foremost, there is a widespread belief that only nerds or students who have aced all their exams can pursue further studying at universities. Academic achievements undeniably show future undergraduates as hard-working, assertive and responsible people. However, there is always a chance that grades do not correctly reflect all students’ abilities. For instance, teenagers can go through tough times, therefore their attendance or exam results might be poor. In addition, professors or teachers might not get along with pupils and be biased, which can lead to unfair assessment.

From my point of view, besides academic achievements, personal characteristics, extracurricular activities and compelling motives for attending universities should be considered as vital. Moreover, there should be a possibility for people of all ages to try to get a degree, because not everyone can choose their career path in their teenage years. Pressure to decide in which field you want to work from your parents and friends can be unbearable and in the result people can choose the wrong degree or life interests might change when you grow up, therefore people of all age categories should have a chance to attend institutes.

In conclusion, an increasing number of people maintain that only pupils with the highest academic achievements should attend universities. I dissent from this point of view and firmly believe that all people should have the possibility to pursue their studying at universities no matter how high their grades are, because the teachers might be biased or inappropriate surroundings and unexpected life challenges might have an impact on academic performance.
