The bar chart illustrates the percentage of accommodation that is owned and rented by households in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, it is obvious that the number of households in owned accommodation showed an upward trend throughout the given period while the households in rented accommodation had a downward trend.
In detail, households in rented accommodation started the period at the highest rate with almost 77% in 1918. Although this trend decreased considerably by 10% for the next year and remained at this level for 2 years, it dropped significantly, decreasing from 77% in 1953 to just over 30% in 2001. However, it was followed by a recovery to around 35% by 2011.
In contrast, the percentage of households in owned accommodation began with just 22% in 1918. There was a stabilized 2-year period just like rented accommodation at 33% before soaring dramatically to reach the peak of slightly under 70% by 2001, which was the bottom line for rented households. This trend then finished the period with a decline of 5% in 2011.
