Overall, India had the highest population of elephants, while China had the lowest number over the period.
The Indian elephants were just under 10, 000 in 1997. Myanmar was the second highest country for elephant dwellings, which more than 5, 000 in 1997. Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia had 2, 000 elephants, while Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand had roughly 3, 000 elephants. However, the least number was seen in China in 1997.
After 7 years, in 2004, the number of elephant in the region was slightly decreased, except Laos. The figure of elephants in India fell to approximately 7, 500 species, Myanmar was about 4, 800, and 1, 200 in Thailand. As far as the dramatic changes, Cambodia was the only country where was increased by about 2, 100, while the figure of elephants reached an alarming rate, at less than 1, 000 elephants, respectively.
