The bar chart compares the quantity of families who bought a house or rented an accomodation place in the European countries, England and Wales between the years 1918 and 2011.
In the year 1918, the number of residents who had a house reached the highest level among these years, however, it declined dramatically until 2001. By contrast, the percentage of renting houses rose or remained stable in this period.
In the first five decades, the number of house owners has fallen down from 80% in 1918 to 50% in 1971. By contrast the percentage of residents who have rented a house increased by the similar number of accommodation owners.
We can see that most of England and Wales residents did not buy a living place between 1981 and 2011. In 2001, approximately 70% of families were living in a rental place, which is the highest number during these years. The status of accommodation of people in the country did not see a wide changing in this decade in relative to the previous one.
