Band 8+: Some people think that governments should focus on public transportation to solve traffic and pollution problems. Others believe that building more roads is a better way to address these issues. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Traffic congestion and pollution are growing problems in many urban areas. While some advocate for constructing more roads to ease traffic flow, others argue that improving public transportation is a better solution. This essay will examine both perspectives and explain why I believe public transportation is the more effective approach.

Building more roads can initially appear to be a practical way to address congestion. Additional highways and road expansions can provide drivers with alternative routes, reducing bottlenecks. For instance, cities that have widened their roads often report short-term improvements in traffic flow. However, this solution is rarely sustainable. A concept known as “induced demand” suggests that increasing road capacity leads to higher car usage, eventually returning congestion to its original levels. Furthermore, this approach does little to reduce pollution, as more vehicles contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

In contrast, investing in public transportation provides long-term benefits for both traffic and the environment. Systems such as buses, subways, and trams can transport large numbers of passengers efficiently, reducing the number of cars on the road. For example, Singapore’s world-class public transport network has drastically reduced car dependency while maintaining air quality. Additionally, public transport systems produce fewer emissions per person, making them a more sustainable solution. Although the initial investment can be expensive, the economic and environmental advantages outweigh the costs in the long run.

In my view, focusing on public transportation is the most effective way to address traffic and pollution issues. By encouraging people to use these systems, governments can create more sustainable and livable cities for future generations.
