Overall there has been a gradual rise in the total number of US citizens residing abroad the USA has augmented since 2015, with Asia showing the most significant increase. In contrast, there hasn’t been much fluctuation in Australia and other continents.
The number of US citizens outside the USA was around 32 million, which surged sharply to nearly 50 million in 2016. Post 2016, the number kept increasing till 2020 but at a much slower rate eventually reaching 52 million in 2020. The major driver of this steady rise in the population of Americans residing in Asia, which climbed from 10 million in 2016 to approximately 28 million in 2020.
US citizens in Australia increased from 5 million to roughly 8 million in 2016, after which the numbers kept decreasing gradually. In the other continents except Asia and Australia again the number peaked in 2016 but after that there were very minor fluctuations as a result in 2020 the number was the same as in 2016.
