Band 7+: We live today in an electronic information age. It is easier to be connected by technology yet many people seem no closer to feeling happy in their lives. Discuss.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

We live in an electronic information age nowadays. The technology has bridged the gaps between people, making the world a small place and bringing people closer to each other. Yet even with these changes, many people are not really satisfied with their lives. This essay shall discuss how and why technology cannot provide us with happiness and the ways people can overcome low well-being.

While technology connects people, it is often at the expense of the quality of human interaction. For example, many people spend hours chatting on social media, while they hardly meet their friends or family in real life. Real-life conversations create deeper bonds, and this is hard to achieve through a screen. Without such personal connections, even though people may be talking to many, they feel lonely.

Second, technology can be a source of stress and negative feelings. For example, social media platforms show people idealized versions of life: they see others traveling, buying expensive things, or having fun, and they start comparing their lives to these unrealistic images. Such comparison often makes them feel like they are not successful or happy enough, which affects their mental health.

It is also a path to isolation, because many are usually over-engaged on the internet: playing games, watching videos, and scrolling through social media. All of these activities might be entertaining for a person but take away valued time from being with loved ones and enjoyable activities that bring satisfaction over longer periods of time. It creates emptiness and dissatisfaction with life after some time.

Technology may have made life easier and communication much more convenient; that does not promise happiness. The balance between technology and meaningful activities would do a great way to improve one’s well-being: people should foster relationships in real life, rather than investing too much in social media.
