Band 8+: some people think that construction bigger roads will help to prevent traffic problems? to what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many people believe that the key to preventing traffic issues is building wider roads. While I agree that establishing bigger routes is essential not only for improving traffic flow but also for urban planning, I believe this approach alone is insufficient to address the problem.

Constructing wider roads certainly has a positive impact on traffic flow. It can reduce congestion, especially during rush hours, allowing road users to benefit from shorter commutes, less waiting time, and reduced anxiety. Furthermore, it enables the creation of multiple pathways for heavy vehicles and bicycles, which can enhance road safety. For instance, more cyclists would be encouraged to commute by bike rather than by car if their safety were enhanced. Expanding roads is also a long-term investment in infrastructure, improving sustainability and adaptability to future changes in population growth, transportation needs, and national security.

Despite these benefits, the number of private car owners has risen significantly, alongside a steady growth in population. As a result, building larger roads is not enough to tackle future traffic problems. For this reason, developing reliable public transportation and encouraging its use are crucial. For example, if public transport were more efficient, reliable, and comfortable, it would lead to a reduction in car use and traffic bottlenecks.

In addition, it must be considered that some cities’ infrastructure cannot support road expansion due to limited space or the prioritization of land for other purposes. However, one potential solution is to divert traffic overhead into bridges or underground into tunnels, which can reduce congestion at the surface level. By implementing such infrastructure, cities can optimize existing space while addressing traffic problems effectively.

In conclusion, although I agree that road expansion is a potential solution, improving public transport and looking for alternative traffic flow options must also be considered to tackle traffic problems effectively.
