In the fast forwarding world, keeping an individual updated with the dynamic technological advancements has become a special skill even compared to the elderly population. A debate has grown over whether the senior citizens should cope up with the latest technological applications while others argue it is not a mandatory concern. In this essay, I will elaborate on both aspects and the reason why I’m in favour of the former.
First and foremost, in terms of lifelong learning it is a vital factor that the people have to associate with moving trends. To be illustrated ,in the financial sector online banking has become extraordinarily popular in almost all the countries. In order to spend a hassle- free lifestyle, pursuing and updating the self awareness related to such computer- aided technology will become an advantage for an elderly person. Secondly, it will enhance mental stimulation along with cognitive health whereas the old generation can enjoy their personal well being even at a higher age. For example, the studies conducted in the western world have shown that the aged personnel who are engaged in online learning activities such as learning a new language, cuisine, are at a low risk to expose some diseases namely Alzheimer. Additionally, being updated with the new technology will increase the self -esteem and confidence in most of the older people in the meantime,as they turn into more independent individuals.
In contrast, some of the issues can be highlighted with the engagement of the latest technology with the elders such as vision impairments. For instance, those who are treated for eye problems can be advised to limit the usage which can make them demotivated. More specifically, the anxiety about learning sophisticated aspects might increase the mental disorders such as stress and depression in those who have personality issues.
Although some disadvantages are spotted in learning new trends by the aged generation, they can be mitigated through the proper guidance and awareness given by the tech savvy younger generation as the significant positive impacts outweigh the said issues that will lead them to not being felt that they are isolated from the rapid development which the world is currently experiencing.
In conclusion, I hold my belief that the senior citizens must be given the opportunity to adapt to the expanding novel technology to enjoy their day to day life during this technological era.
