In my family, we value special occasions and celebrations. One tradition that I remember is when it was someone's birthday; that person would stay in bed until the rest of the family entered the room and sang them awake with a happy birthday song. The whole family would participate in this tradition, and I remember being a little kid. Even if I had woken up in the morning, I would pretend to still be asleep so that I could give the rest of my family time to prepare breakfast and set out the presents, allowing them to continue the tradition of waking me up with a birthday song. It's important to the family because it gives us an opportunity to celebrate one another and to place value on the person who has a birthday, showing them our love through gift-giving, song, and making breakfast. It's a very common Danish tradition to sing a birthday song. It's always a part of the birthday celebration, and of course, you have to have birthday cake as well, so there are a lot of traditions involved in the birthday celebration.
