German book buyers spent about 80 million US dollars in 1995, whereas French, Italian and Austrian buyers spent around 55, 50 and 30 million US dollars respectively in the same year, indicating the higher interest in German readers in buying books in comparision to other countries. Likewise, similar pattern was observed in 1997 with the data demonstrating a slight incline across all countries. The amount spent on buying books by Germans, French and Austrians reached 90, 60 and 40 million dollars by 1995. However, the amount spent by Italian buyers reached about 55 million US dollars in 1997 before falling to the initial amount in 1999.
Between 1999 and 2009, Italian and French spending on books displayed a modest incline reaching around 70 and 54 million US dollars respectively. In contrast, equal amount of spending was observed amongst the Austrian buyers in 1997 and 1998 indicating steady buyers. Similarly, the number of Austrian buyers surpassed the Italians in 2003 and reaching above 70 million by 2005.
