The graph below illustrates amendments in the allocation of average housekeeping income between 1965 and 2015.
Overall, at the beginning, despite starting with similar income as a percentage, accommodation experienced an increase, while savings went down. Another small income category, starting with recreation, has been gradually growing for 50 years.
Regarding individual trends, in 1965 accommodation and savings had the highest household income proportions, with approximately 10% and 14% respectively. However, the accommodation share fell slightly until 1985 and then rose sharply beginning from 1990, rocketing to above 15%.As for savings, they experienced a gradual decline from around 10% in 1965 to below 5% in 2015. In contrast, the proportion of income spent on accommodation rose steadily, reaching the highest level by the end of the period.
Food and transport followed a similar upward trend, though their increases were more moderate. Food expenditure climbed slightly from about 8% to nearly 10%, while transport grew from 5% to approximately 8%.
Spending on gas and electricity fluctuated slightly but remained relatively stable overall, while home improvements saw a small but consistent rise over the 50-year period.
