The table compares men and women in terms of household activities, while the graph gives information about the allocation of men and women across four different household activities in the UK in 2008
Overall, it is clear that women spent significantly more time on household activities than men, while men allocated more time to leisure activities, especially TV and radio.
According to the table, the most time-consuming leisure activity for both genders was watching TV, video and listening to the radio. Men spent most of their time on this, which is in average 137 minutes per day, while women spent 19 minutes less than men, who averaged 118. There is a slight difference between them in reading, for men 18 minutes, while women have one minute more. Time spent on sport had the lowest figures.
Women spent significantly more time on most household activities compared to men, except ‘repair’ tasks. For cooking and washing women took the lead with the highest proportion about 80 minutes, while men’s was over 20 minutes. In shopping, women allocated about 35 minutes, while men spent nearly 20 minutes. Similarly, for clothes washing and ironing, women’s time averaged around 30-35 minutes. The only point where men spent more time was in repairing, averaging approximately 10-15 minutes, whereas women spent only about 2 minutes
