The bar chart compares the proportions of residents in five Australian cities who bought fresh coffee, bought instant coffee, or went to a café for coffee or tea during the previous four weeks.
Overall, going to a café was the most popular habit in most cities, especially in Melbourne and Hobart. By contrast, buying fresh coffee was generally the least common choice, while instant coffee purchases were higher than fresh coffee purchases in all five cities.
Looking first at café visits, Melbourne recorded the highest figure, at around 64%, followed closely by Hobart at about 63% and Sydney at just over 60%. The percentage was lower in Brisbane, at approximately 55%, while Adelaide had the smallest proportion of café visitors, at just under 50%.
Turning to coffee purchases, instant coffee was most popular in Hobart and Brisbane, where the figures stood at about 54% and 53% respectively. Adelaide was slightly lower, at around 50%, compared with about 48% in Melbourne and 46% in Sydney. Fresh coffee attracted fewer buyers overall, with Sydney and Melbourne recording roughly 44% and 43%. The figures were lower in Hobart, at about 38%, and in Brisbane and Adelaide, both at around 34%.
