The bar chart illustrates the percentage of residents in five Australian cities who bought fresh or instant coffee, or visited a café for coffee or tea, during a four-week period.
Overall, visiting cafés was the most popular activity in all but one city. In contrast, purchasing fresh coffee was the least common option everywhere, while instant coffee was consistently more popular.
Turning first to café visits, this was the most popular activity in most cities. Melbourne and Hobart recorded the highest figures, at around the mid-sixties , followed closely by Sydney at just over 60 %. Brisbane also had a relatively high proportion, at approximately 55 %. However, Adelaide was the only city where the figure remained below 50% , slightly lower than the proportion of instant coffee buyers in the same city.
With regard to coffee purchases , there were noticeable differences between instant and fresh coffee in all cities. The proportion of instant coffee buyers ranged from approximately 45 % in Sydney to about 55 % in Hobart, with Brisbane slightly higher than Adelaide at around 54 %. In contrast, fresh coffee purchases were consistently lower, reaching a peak of just under 45 % in Sydney. The lowest figures were recorded in Brisbane and Adelaide, at roughly 34 to 35 %.
