The pie charts compare the proportions of water used for different purposes in six regions of the world. Overall, Europe and North America had the highest proportions of water used for industrial purposes. In contrast, Africa and Central Asia had the lowest figures. It is also noticeable that agricultural use was the largest category in many regions, while domestic use accounted for the smallest proportion.
Looking first at agricultural use, four regions had the highest figures and relatively similar percentages, 71% South America, 84% Africa , 88% Central Asia, and 81% South East Asia. In contrast, North America and Europe showed the lowest figures, at 39% and 32%, respectively.
Regarding the other figures, like industrial use, North America and Europe had similar results. Although North America’s proportion of water used for industry was lower than Europe’s, both figures were considerably higher than those of the remaining regions, which none were higher 12%.
Finally, domestic use had the smallest percentage overall, accounting for 13% in North America, 19% in South America, 15% in Europe, 9% in Africa, and 7% in both Central Asia and South East Asia.
