The chart presents the percentage of families that have a child in three different types of places of China from 1980 to 2000.
In general, it is clear that this proportion of cities always is the largest and while rural areas have the smallest. Besides, more and more families tend to have single-child.
In 1980, the proportion of single-child families varied significantly across regions. Cities had half of households with only one child, while the outskirts slightly is lower with approximately 40%. Rural areas is the smallest in three areas, with quite low percentage nearly 10%.
After 20 years later, there was a rapid and balanced with three areas. By 1990, the figures had risen to about 95% and around 70% in the outskirts, while rural areas doubled their proportion to approximately 20%. By 2000, cities and outskirts had almost converged at around 100% and slightly below, and rural areas is considerable increased, with about 40%
