Information about the metro system in six different cities is reported in the table. Data about the total number of lines, the network size of the system, the annual journeys and the cost of a single ticket have been collected and reported.
Overall all systems have more than 10 lines and serves at least a billion people a year, however there is quite a disparity in terms of ticket pricing and network size across the six cities’ subway.
Looking at the details, the New York subway has the most lines and has the biggest network size, being slightly less than double the length of the second runner up in this category, Beijing.
The Asian systems in Tokyo and Beijing serves more than 3 billion people over a year, which is more than double the amount of journeys carried by other cities’ systems. These systems also have relatively cheaper tickets compared to Europe and US.
Interestingly, even though the Paris metro system is the third by operated lines, it is the smallest one in terms of network size. On the other hand, London has a respectable network size but it has the smallest number of lines and it serve the least amount of people during a year. This could be influenced by the fact that the London ticket is the most expensive, costing almost three times the ticket of a New York subway. The Mexican metro ticket is instead the cheapest one, costing almost one tenth of the New York subway.
