The graph below illustrates the proportion of leisure activities, Europs’ senior population have been doing in their free time from 1980 to the present.
Overall, The majority of elderly in Europe nations preferred to participate in physical activities such as hiking and playing sports, while the remaning chose to do less demanding activities like, reading, going to theatre, and surfing the web.
In the beginning of this period, most individuals chose to play sports and go to theatre with, 60% and 50%, respectively. In contrast, only about 5% of the elderly male and female picked surfing the internet in their free time. Meanwhile, reading and hiking were the third and fourth favorite activities, repectively, attracting 30% and 20% of the citizens, respectively.
Intrestingly, hiking figures has been rising from 1980s, reaching its peak at 80% in 2010s. The figures for it surpassed going to theatre and reading in 1990s, and finally playing sports in 2000s. The numbers for playing sport saw an upward trend, with a slight decrease to 65% in 2010s. Similarly other activities experienced an overall upward trend. Reading took 60%, surfeng the web 50%, and going to theatre 45% of the senior population recreational time in European nations.
