Overall, it is clear that despite slight dominance of hotels over apartments at the beginning of the period, preference for hotels declined suddenly after a decade of gradual growth. Meanwhile, the total number of tourists saw a dramatic increase before witnessing a period of fluctuation.
At the beginning of the period, the total number of people visiting Phuket Island stood at approximately 0.8 million visitors, before surging until 2008 and decreasing marginally between 2008 and 2010. However, after a quick recovery it peaked in 2016 and 2017, before dropping slightly by the end of 2020.
Both apartments and hotels showed a steep increases in the numbers of tourists, as they both shifted from roughly 0.25 and 0.5 million to 3 and nearly 2.7 million visitors respectively by the end of the decade. However, after that surge in the 2009 hotels experienced a steady decrease which lasted until 2020, hitting low of just over 1.5 million visitors. This kind of preference shift caused a considerable rise in the number of people choosing apartment, peaking at 4 million tourists in 2017.
