In 2000, the number of international students in Japan stood at around 60,000. This figure rose to 80,000 in 2005. By 2010, this number increased to 120,000, which was twice as high as at the beginning of the period. It continued to grow, and by 2015 it reached approximately 150,000 foreign students. Finally, the figure rose to about 180,000 in 2020.
Foreign students in France allowed a similar but less dramatic pattern. The figure began at roughly 90,000 in 2000. Over the next five years, this number increased by about 5,000 students. In 2010, it reached 110,000. This upward trend continued, and in 2015 the number rose to 120,000 people. By the final year, the number of international students in France was 130,000, which was about 50,000 fewer than in Japan.
