Dear mother,
I hope this letter finds you well. I would like to thank you for all your well wishes and benevolent letters, and I am pleased to hear that all is going well back at home. I suppose you might be wondering why I haven’t been writing to you often lately. The reason for that is that I injured my hand a week ago from inadvertently falling into a trench. Although my injury, having been quite painful at the time, I am perfectly fine as for now.
We have been in our trenches for the past week or so, and it was a vile experience. Small rodents have been scurrying around in the trenches for as long as I can remember – the poor things were suffering from the lack of food as well. Many of my clothes are disheveled and torn apart.
