Dear Ellen,
Congratulations on moving to Sydney soon, and I’m very happy to give you some advice to improve your English. To help, I’ve listed below some tips to enhance your listening skills, speaking skills, and vocabulary.
To strengthen your listening skills, I think you should listen to more podcasts and watch shows that are in English. If I were you, I would pay attention to what the speakers are saying, and try to understand the words. If there is something you find confusing, I suggest taking note of the words so that you could go back to them later. If you’d like, you could also try listening to short stories or videos, and try to summarize what you heard to determine whether you understood what you listened to or not.
In fact, I believe listening to these podcasts and shows can also help you with your speaking skills. You ought to observe how the people pronounce words, so that you can learn the proper pronunciation. Additionally, I suggest speaking with friends who are already fluent in English. I believe surrounding yourself with English speakers who can easily correct you will be a faster way to improve your diction and grammar. Additionally, speaking more with other people can help you recite the language more fluently and naturally.
Finally, when it comes to your vocabulary, it’s always good to read books or other pieces of English literature. I actually have a few books that I could lend to you if you’d like. If I were you, I would keep a notepad with me to jot down any new words I find while reading, so that I can search their meaning later. On that note, I’d advise you to have a pocket dictionary for a quick look, or have one on your phone installed. Reading could help expand your vocabulary and expose you to more complex words and even sentences.
Aside from what I’ve given you, I’d suggest watching some videos online as well and enrolling in a few classes. I follow a few people on YouTube who give great tips for becoming fluent in English, and I could share them to you if you wish.
Those are the few tips I have, and I hope they’ll be of great use to you. If you want any more advice or even want to practice your English with me, I’m always open to help. Good luck with your learning.
All the best,
Alyssa
