From an overall perspective, it can be seen that the country faced a surge in emigration at the beginning and end of the period given. Regarding unemployment, in spite of the rise in the 1990s, the general trend was downward.
1988 demonstrated the highest rate of emigration, with 60,000 leaving Ireland; however, it was followed by a dramatic and continuing decline, which resulted in fewer than 30,000 citizens leaving the state in 2002. After 2004, relocation began to gain momentum. In 2008, 50,000 individuals decided to choose another place for living.
With regards to unemployment, 1988 showed the worst result, since it accounted for approximately 18%. Nevertheless, the proportion of unemployed people reduced almost to 12% in 1990, but it increased soon, exceeding 14% in 1992. Then, Ireland saw a steady drop, lasting several decades. In the period between 2000 and 2008, the figures were the lowest, varying between 4% and 6%.
