Two tables contain data on sales of fair trade coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries. The first table shows that coffee sales increased at a low rate in all five countries, although at varying rates. Sales increased slightly in both locations as well, in Denmark at €1.8 million to 2 million euros and in Sweden at €800,000 to 1 million euros.
In Belgium, the increase was slightly larger, between 1 million and 1.7 million euros. Sales in Switzerland have now doubled from 3 million euros to 6 million euros. Finally, there was a significant increase in the UK from €1.5 million to €20 million. Switzerland stands out in second table, buying more Fairtrade bananas than the other four countries.
Over the past five years, sales in Switzerland increased from €15 million to €47 million, while sales in the UK and Belgium remained at €1 to €5.5 and €600 respectively. A different pattern was seen in Sweden and Denmark, where banana sales fell by €1.8 million to €1 million and €2 million to €900.
Comparing the two tables, fair trade coffee sales in these five countries in 1999 ranged between €0.8 million and €3 million, while banana sales also ranged between €6 million and €2 million.
Switzerland turned out to be a surprisingly different country. 15 million euros. In 2004, sales of both products increased overall, except in Sweden and Denmark, where banana sales decreased.
