The table below compares the fair trade sales (million of Euros) of coffee and bananas in various European countries, that is- UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden in the year of 1999 and 2004.
We see that the demand of banana is relatively high in the UK as compared to the demand for coffee. However, the sales of coffee has increased more than 10 times in the year 2004 in comparison to 1999. The sales of coffee has not fluctuated much in Belgium, Denmark and Sweden over the years. The demand of coffee doubled in Switzerland from 1999 to 2004.
In 1999, The sales of bananas in Switzerland was 15 million euros which significantly increased to 47 million euros in 2004. Bananas consumption nearly tripled in UK and Belgium. Sweden and Denmark witnessed a slight decrease in the sales of bananas over the years.
The overall growth in gross sales of coffee and banana depicts the benefit to the farmers in experiencing a better lifestyle and a significant rise in GDP.
