The tables illustrate the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five European
countries (UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden) in 1999 and 2004.
Overall, there was a significant increase in the sales of both products in all countries over the five-year period. The most noticeable growth was seen in the UK’s coffee sales and Switzerland’s banana sales.
In 1999, coffee sales were highest in Switzerland at 3 million euros, followed closely by the UK at 1.5 million euros. By 2004, the UK had seen a dramatic increase to 20 million euros, while Switzerland’s sales tripled to 9 million euros. Denmark also experienced growth, albeit modest, from 1.8 to 2 million euros.
As for bananas, Switzerland led the sales in both years, with an impressive rise from 15 to 47 million euros. The UK saw a moderate yet significant increase from one to five and a half million euros. Interestingly, while Belgium’s banana trade quadrupled, Sweden experienced a reduction by almost half.
