The tables provide data on Fairtrade-labelled coffee and banana sales in five European countries (UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden) for the years 1999 and 2004.
Overall, coffee sales rose in all five countries, with the most significant growth seen in the UK. In contrast, banana sales exhibited mixed trends: while sales decreased in Sweden and Denmark, Switzerland experienced the largest increase in banana sales.
In detail, the UK saw the most dramatic growth in coffee sales, which surged from 1.5 million euros in 1999 to 20 million euros in 2004. Similarly, banana sales in the UK increased sharply from 1 million euros to 5.5 million euros. Switzerland followed a similar trend for coffee, with sales doubling from 3 million euros to 6 million euros, while banana sales skyrocketed from 15 million euros to 47 million euros over the same period. Belgium, although having the lowest figures overall, still saw an increase in both products: coffee sales rose from 1 million to 1.7 million euros, and banana sales grew from 0.6 million to 4 million euros.
On the other hand, Sweden experienced modest growth in coffee sales, increasing from 0.8 million euros to 1 million euros. However, its banana sales declined, falling from 1.8 million euros to 1 million euros. Denmark exhibited a similar pattern, with coffee sales climbing slightly from 1.8 million euros to 2 million euros, while banana sales dropped from 2 million euros to 0.9 million euros.
