The line chart illustrates the average monthly income in Japan along with the prices of black and white televisions and color televisions from 1953 to 1983.
Overall there were declines in the prices of black and white television and color television, except for the earnings of Japanese people, which witnessed a significant increase in the final period. Notably, Japanese monthly salaries eventually surpassed the cost of both types of televisions.
Regarding prices of televisions, in 1970, the figure for black and white television was at its peak of 110,000 Yen. a decade later, the cost saw a sharp decrease to 40,000 yen and continued to drop steadily to 20,000 yen by 2000. A similar pattern was seen for color television when it was invented, costing around 100,000 Yen in 1970, then falling considerably over the next 20 years to just under 50,000 Yen in the final year.
In terms of the salaries, at the beginning of the period, the average Japanese monthly salary started at approximately 20,000 Yen, which was notably lower than that of black-white television by around 90,000 Yen. in the next 25 years, the figure for Japanese people saw a gradually increase, from 20.000 to 30,000 Yen in 1995, surpassing the prices of black-white television by 10,000 Yen. in 2000, the Japanese monthly income rise sharply to 70,000, overtaking the leading position.
