The given line graphs depict the number of male and female in a European prison from 1911 to 2001, starting from 1911.
Overall, it is clear that the number of male prisoners witnessed an upward trend, while the opposite was true for females. Additionally, during most of the period, the quantity of male prisoners surpassed their counterparts.
In the first graph, between 1911 and 1921, the figure decreased slightly by 5000 people to 20000. After that, the volume of male prisoners saw a minimal rise for the next 60 years and remained the initial value at 25000 people in 1981, before a steep growth in the last 20 years, reaching its highest peak at 35 000 prisoners.
Regarding the other graph, the number of female prisoners experienced a sharp fluctuation during the given period. In detail, it fell drastically from approximately 4500 to over 3000 people in 1921. However, this number plummeted and hit its bottom at about 1500 prisoners in 1951 followed by a marginal rise to 2,500 in the next 20 years. From 1971 onwards, the amount of female prisoners continued to drop to nearly 1000 in 1991 and remained that value to the last examined year.
