The bar graph demonstrates data on the production of plastic waste (in million tons) in 4 different continents between 1995 and 2020.
Overall, the generation of plastic waste material increased in all 4 continents throughout the period, with the most dramatic rise seen in Asia and it overtaking all the other continents by 2020. North America and Europe saw similar growth in waste production, whilst South America remained the smallest producer of plastic garbage all throughout.
Asian countries produced 20 million tons of plastic garbage in 1995, followed by a steady rise in this number till 2005 where they were equal to european countries at 40 million tons. After this, Asian countries had a massive jump in their waste production overtaking all the other continents and peaking in 2020 at 100 million tons of waste produced in 2020.
North America was the top waste producer in 1995, followed by Europe in second at 30 million tons and approximately 25 million tons respectively. However, in 2000 both continents generated equal amounts of waste at around 35 million tons and this was followed by European countries overtaking their North American counterparts by 2005. Moreover, further increases were seen in both regions ending the period in 2020 with Europe at second highest waste generator at 70 million tons and North America at third place with approximately 65 million tons.
