The graph compares the numbers of male and female students who selected various university subjects in 2005.
Overall, clear gender preferences can be observed in subject choices. Female students showed a strong inclination towards Social Sciences and Languages, whereas males were far more likely to study Science-related subjects and Mathematics. In addition, Mathematics was the least popular subject among females, while Languages attracted the fewest male students.
Among male students, Science was by far the dominant subject area, with enrolments exceeding 15,000. Mathematics also proved highly popular, recording a similarly high figure. By contrast, relatively small numbers of men opted for Languages and the Arts, both of which remained below the 5,000 mark. Social Sciences occupied a middle position, attracting noticeably fewer males than Science subjects.
The pattern for female students was almost the reverse. Social Sciences represented the most popular field, with numbers surpassing 15,000, while Languages also accounted for a substantial proportion of female enrolments. In comparison, comparatively few women chose Mathematics, making it the least favored subject among females. Another noteworthy feature is that participation in Languages was almost identical for both genders.
